ABB: What the new cobots can do

ABB today introduced its new GoFa™ and SWIFTI™ cobots. They complement Yumi. Yumi comes in single- and dual-arm versions. Yumi was developed entirely in China. (Following are mostly press releases.) To start with, SWIFTI™ (see below) can do up to 5 m/s, which could be a record. Both series can be operated intuitively - of course - and should be ready for use quickly. Regarding the target audience, ABB writes: "The versatile new generation cobots are just as suitable for use in manufacturing, medical laboratories, logistics centers and warehouses as they are for use in workshops and small production operations." On support: "Each installed ABB cobot comes with a startup package that includes the ABB Ability™Condition Monitoring & Diagnostics service solution as well as access to ABB's cross-industry online customer service. This is free of charge for the first six months."
Both models are available immediately.
GoFa™
To speak of a family is probably a bit too early. Currently, there is one model, the CRB 1500. With a payload of 5 kg, ABB speaks of a "best-in-class" reach of 950 mm with a speed of 2.2 m/s.
GoFa has a number of features and functions that allow its use in the immediate presence of people.expensive and bulky enclosures or security fences are not required.
GoFa has intelligent torque and position sensors in all six joints. These prevent the risk of injury by detecting accidental contact and bringing the cobot to a halt within milliseconds.
GoFa is easy to program using intuitive lead-through programming and ABB's new Wizard Easy Programming software. Wizard Easy Programming is based on simple graphical blocks and allows even non-specialists to automate their applications. The blocks represent specific actions such as moving to a position, picking up an object and repeating movements. In this way, it is possible to quickly and intuitively create a series of simple processes for the robot to perform.

SWIFTI™
With a payload of 4 kg, the record-breaking speed of 5 m/ s for an MRK can be achieved. With a repeatability of 0.01 mm, it is also more precise than a classic cobot. The SWIFTI CRB 1100 (CRB stands for CollaborativeRoBot) is based on the IRB 1100 industrial robot, which features the highest speed and accuracy in its class. SWIFTI combines a 580 mm reach with the benefits of safe, collaborative operation and ease of use, ABB says. The cobot is intended for applications ranging from manufacturing to logistics.
The robot is suitable for tasks such as assembly or polishing where a human must be present. In other words, for operations that need to be monitored. In the past, such applications required extensive safety measures such as fences or enclosures. This not only affected the cost and size of the installation. Ditto on the speed and productivity of the production line. This is because the robot had to be stopped every time a human could enter the work area.
With SWIFTI, integrated safety laser scanners and ABB's SafeMove safety software ensure that there is no contact between a moving robot and a human. Together, the two technologies enable safe human-robot collaboration. The need for physical barriers is eliminated. They ensure that no person is in the robot's work area while it is moving.
When a person is detected in SWIFTI's work area, its movements are automatically slowed down or completely stopped to allow the operator to safely approach the robot. If the operator moves away again, the cobot resumes its movement and returns to its full speed and production output as soon as the work area is clear. As an additional safeguard, SWIFTI has a status light that indicates the robot's operating status.
