Doosan wins award for its Cobot camera

Doosan from Korea is known for its high-quality cobots. These are offered in numerous variants and some achieve record-breaking values: a reach of 1.70 m or a payload of 25 kg are quite special. Like many a conglomerate, however, Doosan neglects its robotics division. Compared to the group's other activities, it is simply too small. If a financial investor asked me for advice, I would probably tell him: "The products are good, the cobot market is very promising, but they are not making anything of it. Buy the division from the group and invest in sales." Niederrhein Automation GmbH , a company that is dedicated exclusively to Doosan's cobots and not the rest of the program, has recently been established. Now Doosan has won an award in a field for which the company was even less known. Below is the press release:

Doosan wins Honoree at CES® 2022 Innovation Award

Doosan Robotics announced that it has been named an award winner at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 Innovation Awards for its "New Inspiration" ("NINA") robotic camera system. Organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the CES Innovation Awards program is an annual competition that recognizes outstanding design and engineering in 27 consumer technology product categories.
Doosan Robotics' unprecedented robotic camera system, NINA, was recognized by CTA this year for its consumer-friendly software that enables anyone to use robotic cameras to shoot professional movies.
NINA is powered by Doosan's proprietary software with a simplified user interface that allows people with no robotics experience to control the robot while filming. The innovative software enables users to automatically detect an object and calculate the distance to achieve smooth and consistent robotic filming. In addition, users can test angles and movements through simulations before actual filming, which can save time and ultimately production costs.

In addition to its internal elements, NINA also has award-winning hardware features. The NINA-equipped Doosan robot overcomes the limitations of conventional camera robots, offering 360-degree rotation unparalleled in film production and an ergonomically compact design that rivals industrial robots with an amazing 25 kg payload. The safety standard of the fenceless robot, which virtually sets up workspaces, has been awarded the highest ratings Pl e and Cat. 4 for its safety and emergency stop functions. It also features safety controls with collision sensitivity supported by six torque sensors and a gravity compensation algorithm. In addition, the robot comes with an external controller that acts as a joypad for easy control.
To further improve the robot's accessibility, Doosan Robotics plans to build an open platform where users can share camera movement presets to diversify filming results and allow beginners to include difficult-to-film angles with a single click. In this way, the company ultimately aims to foster an inspiring, open ecosystem for content creators.

The author of this blog is significantly involved in the AI/ robotics project Boost-Bot. He advises robotics companies and investors on market (entry)/ business development and funding/subsidies. The standard book on cobots is also written by Guido Bruch (however, the book is already 2 years old and therefore not quite up to date). More about him can be found here.
