Exoskeleton: The closest form of collaboration

The first exoskeleton caused a stir a few years ago. Then, in my opinion, it became quiet about this robotic solution. Despite various company visits, I only know of Bremer Lagerhaus AG as a user of exoskeletons. By their tight fit alone, they already support correct posture and body tension. Since they additionally donate strength, they have an additional effect. The extremely resourceful Italian robotics specialist Comau has produced a case study of its skeleton called "Mate" that is well worth seeing. Users are very pleased, though an old criticism still lingers in the back of my mind: Somewhere the load would have to be transported on the body, possibly going to the knees. However, an older employee with a bad back but apparently good knees might not see this as a problem.

Comau sees the main advantages as:

  • reduced mucosal and cardiac fatigue
  • Improved posture and thus reduced occupational diseases
  • Naturally comfortable and highly breathable
  • Follows the physiological movements without resistance and misalignment
  • Improved precision for repetitive tasks
  • Improved work quality and performance
