E-Cobot: Mobile robots from France

The always-worth-listening podcast "Robotics in Industry" recently pointed out that there is now a thriving robotics landscape in France. Around 800 companies, predominantly startups, are now active, he said. Surprisingly, few of them seem to be known in Germany. At least, companies like MIP-Robotics or even E-Cobot cannot be noticed. E-Cobot probably has less need of foreign markets than the very specialized provider MIP-Robotics. After all, logistics solutions are also booming in France.

E-Cobot has a wide range of mobile robots. The main model "Husky" carries 250 kg, pulls up to a ton, works up to 10 hours charged and has 360-degree vision. A minimum of 58,000 hours is cited as the lifespan - according to the simulation. Markets the company sees include retail, industry and hospitals. Reference customers include Airbus.

The "Robot-as-a-Service" model is interesting, where a used Husky can be used for €5/hour. Over the course of a year, this can add up to quite a bit, depending on the workload. But for the cautious and to gain confidence certainly not a bad idea.

I had two interesting "eye-openers" on robotics in logistics in the last few days: First, I visited a large OEM. The employee said that production is largely optimized, and that the potential lies primarily in logistics, which has three times as many employees: These unpack many individual parts, check them and then transport them to production. Among other things, I took part in an online event organized by the Bavarian Mechatronics and Automation Cluster. One of the speakers works at Bosch-Siemens-Hausgeräte. BSH manufactures 13,000 dishwashers a day in its plant alone. This shows that even beyond the automotive industry, there are numerous large-volume serial productions with comparable logistics issues: Unpacking, checking, staging, shipping.
