Festo and robotics

Festo is always a star at the Hannover Messe. Things like the BionicCobot originate from the company, but I don't think it ever went into large-scale production. The website still presents it in the subjunctive "Especially in monotonous, mindless or even dangerous tasks, it could be used as an assisting robot and relieve the human being.

A current research collaboration with the KIT Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is likely to be closer to the market. Taking data protection aspects into account, spatially separated robots are to cooperate and exchange information in pick-and-place. The approach is interesting: If company A has taught its robot something, how can it then communicate the information to company B in such a way that B can save time but does not learn everything. It's all about distributed learning. It also seems conceivable that the know-how could be commercialized. More information about the research project FLAIROP and its partners can be found here.

Watching this fairly recent corporate video, I wondered if Festo was developing a new, larger robot. Interesting in this context is a sentence from the management report: "A major field opening up new opportunities for Festo is robotics, which is being used in more and more applications. A number of projects are seeking to translate these opportunities into future sales and earnings potential."
