Aeon Robotics: An update on the promising robot hand

A few months ago, the Braunschweig-based startup Aeon Robotics was presented here. Founded in the summer of 2021, it has since won several awards. By the way, the startup has no investor, so it finances itself. Time for an update.

Interesting portfolio

I still consider the company to be one of the most interesting and most promising in German robotics. On the one hand, it stands for a - according to the statement - amortizing hand effector and, moreover, for a two-armed robot corpus. In addition, a robot dog is being developed for research.

The first robot hand that is likely to succeed

Robot hands have been around for years. The best known is probably the one from Shadow Robotics, which is, however, considered expensive and also rather too heavy. Schunk and Wessling Robotics entered the field years ago. Wessling Robotics was founded by the Agile Robots founders back in 2013 and today runs alongside "Agile". However, Schunk and Wessling Robotics were not particularly present with their hands. Presumably, it was also due to the price. So what distinguishes Aeon Robotics from the first-mentioned companies without significant market success? On the one hand, it is probably the targeted price of under 10,000 euros including the operating system that makes the product attractive. Then there is the possibility to buy in AI and finally the weight should be suitable. Besides, the short time span from the founding of the company to the planned market launch in the first half of 2023 is reminiscent of the speed of Neura Robotics or RobCo. The associated lower development costs allow a different calculation.

The hand is not intended for research, but for productive use. Use cases are seen in food logistics and in the food sector. The reason for this is that sensitive objects can be gripped without damage. Later, the assembly area also appears to be interesting. For example, plug-in connections or possibly flexible parts in automobile production. However, these are still ideas, according to Dr. Lars Heim, Co-Founder of Aeon Robotics. In general, of course, the large area of logistics continues to be interesting in order to automate jobs there that could not be automated up to now. Breaks in the production line, so to speak, where people still have to stand today. Aeon Robotics would thus join the ranks of automation enablers.
