Shoe retailer Schuurman Schoenen (NL) uses Magazino robots

A long time ago, the Munich-based startup Magazino, founded back in 2014, was introduced here with "High revenues come later than planned". In fact, as with almost all startups, more time passed than originally thought. However, with investors such as Jungheinrich, Körber AG or - for a long time now - Zalando and Fiege Logistik in the meantime, a year earlier or later doesn't really matter. The investors gave around 50 million euros. After an already good 2021 in my opinion, the business is now (further?) picking up speed.

Magazino is among the many Bavarian startups that received initial attention through events organized by BayStartup (Bavarian state agency for the promotion of innovative entrepreneurship). To the press release:

Warehouse automation thanks to the TORU picking robot

Munich, Jan. 30, 2023 - Robotics company Magazino has won Schuurman Schoenen as a new customer for its TORU mobile picking robot. The Dutch company, known for its wide range of shoes, will use the robots in its warehouse in Neede, Netherlands. By using the TORU robot, Schuurman Schoenen is implementing flexible automation for the manual picking process of shoe boxes.

With the introduction of the intelligent, mobile picking robot TORU, Schuurman is one of the innovative pioneers in the industry. The continuous growth in e-commerce and smaller batch sizes require automation solutions that can be flexibly adapted and scaled.

The TORU mobile picking robot operates autonomously with the help of 3D camera technology and numerous sensors and can work around the clock. It can also be used in inbound and outbound processes without any problems. The TORU robots reduce the typical order peaks in e-commerce and improve throughput times for customers, as they can also work at night or on weekends.

This is what large orders look like (here for customer Zalando)

Arjan Schuurman CEO Schuurman Schoenen says: "With the Magazino robotic solution TORU, we have found a flexible solution to secure our growth and services to our customers in the coming years in a very competitive market."

Julia Scholz Sales Diretor Magazino GmbH says: "We are excited to start our joint project to integrate our intelligent mobile robots into the existing Schuurman processes. With the TORUs, Schuurman Schoenen has a solution to scale the fleet according to growth and increase the availability of services to customers."

About TORU

With its vacuum gripper, TORU picks up individual shoe boxes from the shelving system, transports them to the transfer station and also stores returns. Via WLAN, the robot is not only connected to Schuurman's warehouse management system, but also to a local and global cloud. With this connection and artificial intelligence approaches, TORU learns from its experiences every day, allowing it to improve its own performance and robustness while sharing its insights with fellow robots in the fleet.

Among the key benefits of TORU is its ability to integrate into the existing warehouse environment in Neede without any conversion work and to support human colleagues in their activities. In this way, TORU can relieve employees of less ergonomic tasks, such as picking from the lowest or top shelf or walking particularly long distances in the warehouse. Thanks to numerous sensors, the TORU robot can perceive its environment, detect people or obstacles in the way, and thus safely pick in parallel with humans in the same work area. With up to 20 hours of operating time, TORU can also operate at night or outside core working hours.

In my own business/ advertising
The author of this blog answers companies the question if and how a robot could be used in your company (initial analysis including recommendation). This in the greater areas of Trier and Lüneburg as well as Eastern Germany without Leipzig/ Berlin for 700 € net, in the rest of Germany for an all-inclusive price of 1,750 € net (incl. travel). The low price is possible thanks to promotion. Permanently looking for interesting solutions, he has already seen hundreds of applications. For this reason, his customers also include large companies that have know-how but do not know the entire market. For companies with 250 employees or more or those based in Austria or Switzerland, the flat rate does not apply. You can find more about him here.
